Ruby Ball Material

Ruby is the industry-standard stylus ball material and the optimal choice for the vast majority of measurement applications due to its exceptional hardness, excellent wear resistance, and dimensional stability. Very few applications require alternative materials.
For heavy-duty scanning applications on aluminum or cast iron, silicon nitride and zirconia balls are preferred respectively.

Stainless Steel Stem Material

Stainless steel stem styli are widely used, especially for styli with ball diameters of 2 mm or greater and lengths up to 30 mm. For longer applications, ceramic stems provide crash protection by shattering upon collision, helping to protect the probe.
For short-stem applications, tungsten carbide is preferred for maximizing stiffness, while carbon fiber is ideal for specialized applications in harsh machine tool environments.
