Ruby Ball Material

Ruby is the industry-standard stylus ball material and is optimal for the vast majority of measurement applications due to its high hardness, excellent wear resistance, and dimensional stability. Only a small number of applications require alternative materials.
For heavy-duty scanning applications on aluminum or cast iron, silicon nitride and zirconia balls are preferred respectively.

Stainless Steel Stem Material

Stainless steel stem styli are widely used, particularly for styli with ball diameters of 2 mm or greater and lengths up to 30 mm. For longer applications, ceramic stems offer added crash protection by shattering upon collision to help protect the probe.
For short-stem applications, tungsten carbide provides maximum stiffness, while carbon fiber is ideal for specialized applications in harsh machine tool environments.
