Ruby Ball Material

Ruby is the industry-standard and optimal stylus ball material for the vast majority of measurement applications. Very few applications exist where ruby is not the preferred choice due to its excellent wear resistance, hardness, and dimensional stability.
For heavy-duty scanning applications on aluminum or cast iron, silicon nitride and zirconia balls are preferred respectively.

Stainless Steel Stem Material

Stainless steel stem styli are widely used for styli with ball diameters of 2 mm or greater and lengths up to 30 mm. For longer applications, ceramic stems offer additional crash protection, as the stem will shatter in the event of a collision.
For short-stem applications, tungsten carbide is preferred for maximizing stiffness, while carbon fiber is ideal for unique applications requiring protection in hostile machine tool environments.
