This straight stylus features a highly spherical 6.0 mm silicon nitride ball mounted on a stainless steel stem. Silicon nitride is extremely hard and wear-resistant, minimizing stylus wear, while its low density keeps tip mass low to avoid unwanted probe triggers during measurement.

Silicon nitride balls are ideal for aggressive scanning applications on aluminum and soft metals where adhesive wear can occur with ruby. Stainless steel stems provide excellent stiffness and ball/stem clearance for styli with diameters of 2 mm or greater and lengths up to 30 mm. Other stem materials like tungsten carbide, ceramic, or carbon fiber (“Renishaw GF”) are available for specialized applications.
